What is the free kundli?
A kundli — also called a janam kundali, birth chart or horoscope — is a map of the sky at the exact moment you were born. Vedic astrology divides that sky into twelve houses and twelve rashis, then plots the nine grahas (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu) across them. Where each planet falls, and which house it rules, is what every prediction in Jyotish is ultimately built on.
This calculator produces a full kundli from three inputs: your date of birth, your time of birth, and your place of birth. Time matters more than most people expect — the lagna (ascendant) changes roughly every two hours, and it anchors the entire house structure. A birth time that is off by an hour can shift your lagna to the next sign and change the interpretation of almost every planet in the chart.
The chart is computed with the Lahiri ayanamsa, the sidereal reference used by the Indian government calendar and by the overwhelming majority of Indian astrologers. That is why a Vedic kundli places your Sun a sign earlier than the Western horoscope you may have read in a newspaper — the two systems measure from different starting points, and neither is a mistake.
How this calculator works
- 1
Enter your birth date and exact time
Use the time recorded on your birth certificate or hospital record if you have it. If you only know it approximately, note that the lagna and house positions may shift.
- 2
Pick your birth place from the suggestions
Selecting a city from the list attaches its latitude, longitude and timezone — the chart cannot be computed from a typed place name alone.
- 3
We compute the sidereal positions
Planetary longitudes are calculated for your exact moment and location, then corrected by the Lahiri ayanamsa to give sidereal (Vedic) positions.
- 4
Read your chart and planet table
You get the rasi chart, your lagna, moon rashi and nakshatra, plus a table of every graha with its sign, degree and house.
Frequently asked questions
Yes. The birth chart, lagna, rashi, nakshatra and planetary position table are all free and need no login. You only pay if you choose to discuss the chart with an astrologer.
Enter the closest time you know. Your moon rashi and nakshatra will usually still be correct, but the lagna and the house placement of the planets may be wrong. For an accurate chart without a birth time, astrologers use birth-time rectification, which needs a consultation.
Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which is currently about 24 degrees behind the tropical zodiac used in Western sun-sign horoscopes. If you were born in the first few days of a sign in the Western system, your Vedic sign will be the previous one.
You can switch between North Indian, South Indian and East Indian styles. The underlying planetary data is identical; only the diagram layout differs by regional convention.
Your result gets a shareable link that reproduces the same chart when opened. To store kundlis in an account and generate PDF reports, sign in to KundliVala.
In Indian usage they are the same thing — a chart of the planets at your birth. The daily "horoscope" in newspapers is something else entirely: a general prediction for everyone sharing one sun sign, not a personal chart.
