What is the rashi calculator?
In Vedic astrology your rashi means your moon sign — the zodiac sign the Moon occupied at your birth, not the Sun. This is the single biggest source of confusion for people who grew up reading Western sun-sign horoscopes. When an Indian astrologer, a temple priest or a daily rashifal asks for your rashi, they are asking about the Moon.
The reason is that Jyotish treats the Moon as the significator of the mind, emotion and daily experience. Predictions about mood, relationships and the texture of ordinary life track the Moon far better than the Sun, which the tradition assigns to the soul, authority and vitality. Every Vimshottari dasha, every gun milan, and every rashifal column is calculated from the Moon.
The Moon moves through a full sign in roughly two and a quarter days, so unlike a sun sign your rashi cannot be read off the calendar date alone — it genuinely needs your birth details. Frequently asked questions
Not usually. Your rashi is your Vedic moon sign; the "zodiac sign" from Western horoscopes is your tropical sun sign. They are computed from different bodies and different zodiacs, so they rarely coincide.
Two separate reasons compound. First, rashi uses the Moon rather than the Sun. Second, Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which currently sits about 24° behind the tropical one.

Some traditions assign a rashi from the first syllable of your given name, especially when the birth time is unknown. Where the two differ, the rashi computed from the actual Moon position is the astrologically accurate one.
