What is the kundli matching?
Kundli matching, or gun milan, is the ashtakoot system used across North India to assess whether two people are astrologically suited for marriage. It compares the bride's and groom's moon nakshatras across eight koots — Varna, Vashya, Tara, Yoni, Graha Maitri, Gana, Bhakoot and Nadi — and awards each a fixed number of points. The eight scores add up to 36.
The koots are not equally weighted, and that is the part most online score-only tools hide. Nadi alone carries 8 points and Bhakoot 7, so a couple can lose almost half the total on two koots while matching perfectly everywhere else. Conversely, a high headline score with a Nadi dosha is treated very differently by an astrologer than the same score without one. This calculator shows every koot separately, with its score and its maximum, so you can see where the points actually went.
Conventionally, 18 and above is considered acceptable, 25 and above is considered very good, and below 18 warrants a closer look. But gun milan is one input, not a verdict. It says nothing about the seventh house, Venus, Jupiter, the dasha periods either person is running, or mangal dosha — all of which a real matchmaking analysis weighs alongside the score.

Nadi dosha occurs when both partners share the same nadi, scoring 0 of the available 8 points. Classical texts treat it as significant for progeny and health. Several recognised exceptions cancel it — for example when both share the same rashi but different nakshatras — which is why it is worth having a real astrologer check rather than assuming the worst from a score.
No. Gun milan measures one specific kind of compatibility drawn from the moon nakshatras. It does not account for the seventh house, the position of Venus and Jupiter, running dasha periods, or mangal dosha, all of which a full matchmaking reading considers.
The 36-point ashtakoot system is dominant in North India. South Indian traditions use the ten-porutham system, which weighs the koots differently. Both are recognised; they simply answer the question with different tables.
Gun milan itself depends on the moon nakshatra, which moves relatively slowly, so approximate times are often tolerable. Mangal dosha and the house-based part of the analysis do need accurate times.
